It’s three days until Halloween and you never got started on those big ideas for Halloween costumes, did you? That’s okay! There’s no need to panic. It happens to all of us.
Even if you (or the kids) have a Halloween event as soon as tomorrow night, it’s not too late to create a costume. You just might have everything you need in your wardrobe, already. If not, a quick trip to the thrift store should be all you need to make one of these 10 ideas for last-minute Halloween costumes.

Lumberjack
All you need for this one is jeans, boots, a big flannel shirt, and a toy axe. If you’re crafty, you can make an axe from cardboard. And, if you don’t already have a lumberjack-style beard, consider drawing one on with makeup as the finishing touch. An eyeliner pencil will do the trick. -
1980’s Rockstar
Break out the hairspray, some cool shades, a bandana to wear, and all the denim you can find. If you have some around, stick some drumsticks in your back pocket or carry a toy guitar. If you need costumes for the whole family, let everyone join the band. Don’t forget your road crew and security team members. -
Farmer
This one’s not too different from the lumberjack. Get out that flannel shirt again, but this time pair it with overalls and a straw hat or grandpa’s old trucker’s cap. Add a bandana to wipe your brow and carry a stuffed animal to represent your farm animals. What are you raisin’ this year? Ducks? Chickens? Horses? Teddy bears? -
Men in Black
This is a simple idea for a group. Black suits, white shirts, black ties, dark shades, and a couple of squirt guns will turn the whole family into alien-hunting secret agents. -
Addams Family
Put everyone into black clothes, then add details. Your smallest girl needs a black dress, a couple of braids, dark lips and eyeliner. The smallest boy needs black, shorts, a black and white striped t-shirt and charcoal makeup around the eyes. Mom needs a black gown, long black hair, red lips, and black eyeliner. Dad needs old-fashioned slicked back hair and a pencil mustache. Don’t forget everyone’s faces should be made to look pale! -
A Friend or Family Member
If a friend or family member is willing to lend you some of their clothes, why not dress up as them? Lend them some of your clothes and they can dress as you, too! Try to one-up each other with the best impersonation. -
Rosie the Riveter
You can become a cultural icon in no time flat! If you don’t have a utility jumpsuit, wear jeans and a denim/chambray long sleeve button up shirt. Roll up those sleeves! Tie a red bandana around your hair. Put on some red lipstick and black mascara and pump those arm muscles. -
House Cat/Wild Cat
Since animal prints are popular in fashion right now, this one may be really easy. Dig up clothing in cheetah and leopard prints if you can or you can dress in all black, gray, white, ginger… any color that represents a cat. Paint on a cat nose and some whiskers. Then add a headband with cat ears. If you can’t find one at the store, you can make your own. -
Tinker Bell
It takes barely the wave of a wand to become this childhood fairy. All you need is a green dress, green shoes, some cotton balls, and some wings. Use double-sided tape to stick the cotton balls to the tops of your shoes (flats will work best). Put your hair up in a bun and fasten on your wings. Bring along some glitter if you want to help other people fly, too! -
Bread Winner
If you don’t mind hearing groans from all of your friends and family members, this costume is your recipe for success. Hang a few winner’s medals around your neck. You can make them or buy some at a discount store, and carry a loaf of bread in each arm. Who doesn’t love a good pun?
Whatever you decide to dress up as for Halloween, get creative! If these ideas don’t spark any excitement, dig through your closet and find something that does. And, when all else fails, an old sheet always makes an excellent ghost costume.
