Tomorrow, Jan. 19, is Popcorn Day, a very “unofficial” holiday, but any excuse to eat popcorn is a valid one to us!
America loves popcorn so much, “National Popcorn Day” can’t stay put any one date on the calendar. Some like to associate it with the final big pro football game every year. (Feel free to celebrate again on Feb. 13!) Others, for an unknown reason back in the 1970s and ‘80s, celebrated it on different days throughout January.
Nevertheless, today is as good a day as any to celebrate. You can join in by building a popcorn buffet! Follow along and let’s get poppin’ with some old-school instructions.
Popcorn Popping 101
Microwave popcorn is a real gift for easy snacking, but the prepackaged microwavable popcorn just doesn’t taste the same as the traditional stuff. Plus, it’s more expensive. It’s hard to beat the original, all-natural flavor. If you’ve never made it that way, here’s an easy lesson on How to Pop Popcorn on the Stovetop.
If you insist, you can still get the speed and ease of the microwave without all the added chemicals. You just have to package your own microwavable popcorn using brown paper bags. Here’s an easy lesson on how to make Homemade Microwave Popcorn.
Popcorn in Every Flavor?
Before the advent of store-bought microwave popcorn—and its exploding selection of flavors— most people snacked on popcorn one of three ways: with salt, with butter, or with salt and butter. For the purposes of a popcorn buffet, let those toppings be the start of your popcorn spread but know you can add salty, sweet, sour, and every flavor in between! If you need some recipes to get you started, here are 50 Flavored Popcorn Recipes.
Popcorn for Every Meal?
If there’s no time or space for a full spread, make Popcorn Day your chance to try some really outrageous popcorn-centric recipes. You can include it in every meal!

There are so many popcorn recipes out on the web and in recipe books, we could eat it a different way every day for at least an entire year… We’d better get poppin’!
